World Photography Day 2026 Highlights Home, History, and Sharing

World Photography Day happens every year on August 19.

In 2026, photographers are being asked to think about what “home” feels like.

Home might mean a kitchen, a familiar window, a neighborhood, or a family tradition.

It can also mean memories and important everyday objects.

The date goes back to 1839, when France shared a new photographic invention with the world for free.

Joseph Nicéphore Niépce had made the first permanent photograph years earlier.

Louis Daguerre later created a process that made sharp pictures on silver-coated copper plates.

Photography is still celebrated because cameras are widely available and pictures can preserve memories and show important events.

The modern worldwide observance began after a proposal in 2009 and an online gallery in 2010.
