Parliament probe finds Justice Yashwant Varma failed to explain cash
A judge is someone who makes sure laws are followed.
Yashwant Varma was a very important judge in India.
One night, there was a fire at his official home in New Delhi.
Firefighters and police found lots and lots of burnt money there.
A special group of important people was asked to find out what happened.
They said the judge could not explain where the money came from.
They also said the burnt money disappeared before it could be collected as evidence.
The judge said he knew nothing about the money and blamed others, but the group did not believe him.
He quit his job in April.
Now other smart people are arguing about what should happen next because he is no longer a judge.
A parliamentary inquiry committee found all three charges proved against former judge Yashwant Varma over unexplained cash found at his New Delhi official residence.
The committee report was tabled in the Lok Sabha on August 12 after 146 MPs sought his removal under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968.
Eight fire, police and Central Reserve Police Force witnesses described bundles, heaps and stacks of burnt, half-burnt and wet Rs 500 notes, though the exact amount was never quantified.
The panel held Varma responsible for the notes' disappearance, citing his staff's cleaning of the storeroom and his telephone contact with them, but found no direct proof he removed the cash.
With Varma having resigned in April, legal experts disagree on what happens next: G Mohan Gopal says the removal motion cannot proceed, while Indira Jaising says the findings could enable prosecution.

Senior Advocate Indira Jaising says the inquiry findings could be used to enable a prosecution against Justice Varma, since he no longer has the protections from prosecution that judges are afforded after resigning.
