Supreme Court Declines Assam Flood PIL, Seeks Remedial Action

Supreme Court Declines Assam Flood PIL, Seeks Remedial Action

A lawyer asked India’s top court to order stronger action against floods and river erosion in Assam.

The court did not agree to take up the case as a legal matter.

The judges said the concerns should be brought to the attention of the authorities responsible.

They told the court registry to send those authorities a copy of the petition.

The lawyer said that existing laws and government bodies are meant to help manage floods, erosion and drainage.

The petition also pointed to reports describing problems with planning and maintaining flood-control work.

It cited vacancies at the Brahmaputra Board and funds that the petitioner said had not been used.

The lawyer asked for better studies, planning, infrastructure checks and oversight.

The court did not order those specific measures, but asked authorities to consider the issues and take appropriate remedial action.
