The allegations stem from an August 2025 criminal referral by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte; Cook's lawyer Abbe Lowell calls them baseless, citing an "isolated notation" error.
Cook says the removal attempt is a "manufactured pretext" for refusing to bow to political pressure, and Senator Elizabeth Warren said Democrats will "fight back" to make sure the effort fails.
