SC says no timeline for Bengal voter deletion appeal tribunals

SC says no timeline for Bengal voter deletion appeal tribunals

Before a big election in West Bengal, a state in India, officials checked the list of people who could vote.

Many people were taken off the list.

If someone thought they were removed by mistake, they could ask a special court, called a tribunal, to put their name back.

So many people appealed that the tribunals became very slow.

Another court said that if things kept moving at that speed, it would take about 21 years to finish.

The highest court in India, the Supreme Court, talked about this problem.

It said it could not order a time limit for the tribunals to finish their work.

But it did ask the election office to share how many cases were finished and how many were still waiting.

Millions of voters were affected, and only a small number of names have been put back on the list so far.
