Zydus Launches Affordable Cancer Biosimilar Nivolumab
Zydus Lifesciences has launched a new cancer drug called Tishtha, which is a biosimilar version of the expensive drug nivolumab.
This means it works similarly but is much cheaper.
The drug is used to treat advanced cancers like lung and head-and-neck cancers.
Zydus was allowed to sell it by the Delhi High Court, even though the original drug's patent is still valid until 2026.
The court said it was important to make this life-saving drug available to more people.
The original drug, sold by Bristol-Myers Squibb, is much more expensive, so this new version will help many patients who couldn't afford the treatment before.
Zydus Lifesciences launched Tishtha, a biosimilar of nivolumab, at a fraction of the patented price.
The drug is priced at ₹13,950 for a 40-mg dose and ₹28,950 for a 100-mg dose.
Nivolumab is used to treat advanced cancers like lung and head-and-neck cancers.
The Delhi High Court allowed the sale of Tishtha, citing public interest and the patent's expiry in 2026.
Bristol-Myers Squibb holds the patent for nivolumab and sells it under the brand name Opdivo.
