Nicobarese Cultural Continuity Added to UNESCO Tentative List

Nicobarese Cultural Continuity Added to UNESCO Tentative List

The Nicobarese are an Indigenous community living in the Nicobar Islands.

Their culture includes traditions, knowledge and community practices passed down through generations.

These practices are closely connected to the islands’ forests, coasts and surrounding sea.

UNESCO has placed this cultural area on India’s Tentative List.

This means it is being considered for possible World Heritage recognition in the future.

It does not mean the area has already become a World Heritage Site.

The proposed area includes seven islands in the Central Nicobar group.

The listing gives more attention to living Indigenous culture, not only old buildings or ruins.
