Kerala Local Polls: UDF Wins, BJP Gains
In a recent election for local government positions in Kerala, India, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) won most of the important positions.
They won four out of six big city councils, many smaller village councils, and most of the town councils.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF), which is currently in power, did not do as well.
The big surprise was that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which usually doesn't win many seats in Kerala, won control of the council in the state's capital, Thiruvananthapuram.
This is a big change because the LDF had controlled this area for over 40 years.
The UDF's good performance might mean they could win the next big state election, which would be a big deal for the Congress party.
The BJP's win is also important because it shows they are growing stronger in Kerala, even though they don't have any seats in the state's government right now.
The CPI(M), a part of the LDF, ruled out any alliance with the Congress to keep the BJP out of power, despite both parties being part of the INDIA bloc at the national level.
UDF won majority of corporations, gram panchayats, block panchayats, and municipalities in Kerala local polls.
BJP made significant gain by winning Thiruvananthapuram corporation, a long-time LDF stronghold.
CPI(M) ruled out any alliance with Congress to keep BJP out of power in local bodies.
Congress considered joining hands with CPI(M) to prevent BJP from gaining power but fears political embarrassment ahead of the assembly elections.
LDF's poor performance attributed to various factors, with CPI(M) denying anti-incumbency played a role.
