Trump Picks Heidi Overton to Lead FDA Amid Health Clashes

President Donald Trump chose Dr. Heidi Overton to run the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA helps decide whether medicines, vaccines and other health products can be used in the United States.

Trump wants the agency to approve treatments faster, encourage innovation and help lower drug prices.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also wants major changes through his Make America Healthy Again movement.

Overton has supported an effort to separate the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine into three shots.

Scientists and medical groups say vaccines do not cause autism.

Overton has also criticized abortion pills, which could lead to tighter rules if she becomes commissioner.

The Senate must approve her, and some senators have already raised concerns about her qualifications and policy views.

The next FDA leader will also inherit unfinished work involving foods, antidepressants, vaccines, vaping products and drug approvals.
