Understanding Cryptocurrency Taxation in India
Cryptocurrencies, or virtual money, are gaining popularity, which means investors need to understand how they're taxed.
In India, if you make money from buying or selling crypto, you have to pay a 30% tax on those earnings.
The good news is that the tax rate remains the same no matter how long you've held the crypto.
You can't deduct any expenses related to your crypto activities, except for what you paid to buy the crypto.
If you give crypto as a gift, the person receiving it has to pay tax.
Also, if you lose money on crypto, you can't use that loss to lower your taxes on other income or carry it over to the next year.
You'll also need to include detailed information for each transaction covering date of acquisition and transfer, head of income, cost of acquisition and consideration received.
Income from selling or trading Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs) is taxed at 30% in India.
No deductions are allowed for VDA transfer expenses, except for acquisition costs.
Gifting digital assets is subject to tax on the receiver.
Losses from digital assets cannot be offset against other income or carried forward.
Indian crypto investors are not permitted to claim any expenses related to their crypto activities, except for the acquisition cost.
