Low MP Attendance in Parliament Budget Session
A report by the NGO Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative found that less than half of the MPs in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha attended more than 90% of the budget session.
The budget session lasted for 31 days.
In the Lok Sabha, only 45.76% of the MPs attended between 90 and 100% of the sittings, while 63.98% attended at least 75% of the sittings.
In the Rajya Sabha, 46.67% of the MPs attended between 90 and 100% of the sittings, and 62.35% attended at least 75% of the sittings.
MPs from states that went to polls during the budget session, such as Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, attended fewer than 20% of the sittings on average.
The BJP and INC had lower average attendance rates compared to smaller parties.
The report also noted that attendance does not indicate the number of hours each MP spent on the floor of the House.
