IAEA Unable to Verify Iran's Enriched Uranium Stockpile
The world's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, is concerned because it can't check how much special uranium Iran has anymore.
This happened after some of Iran's nuclear sites were bombed in June.
Because the IAEA can't do its checks, it doesn't know the exact amount of uranium Iran has that is very close to being pure enough to make a bomb.
Iran says its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.
This situation makes it hard for the IAEA to be sure about Iran's nuclear activities.
The IAEA needs Iran to let its inspectors back into the damaged sites and provide information before it can resume its checks.
This issue is important because enriched uranium can be used for peaceful energy or for weapons.
The IAEA reported that verifying Iran's enriched uranium stock is 'long overdue'.
Iran has not allowed inspectors into nuclear sites bombed in June.
The IAEA has lost continuity of knowledge of Iran's enriched uranium stocks.
Iran has accumulated uranium enriched up to 60% purity, which is a short step from weapons-grade.
The IAEA requires Iran to provide a special report on the status of bombed facilities before inspections can resume.
- Who
- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
- What
- Urged Iran to allow verification of its highly enriched uranium stockpile, reporting a loss of continuity of knowledge due to lack of access to bombed nuclear sites.
- When
- Wednesday
- Where
- Iran
- Why
- The IAEA cannot verify Iran's enriched uranium stock as it has not been allowed access to nuclear sites bombed in June.
