First-of-Its-Kind Kolkata Surgery Saves Woman with Endometrial Sarcoma
A 55-year-old woman in Kolkata, India, had a type of cancer called endometrial sarcoma.
She had surgery and radiotherapy for it ten years ago, and she stayed healthy for a whole decade.
But recently the cancer came back in her belly, causing swelling in her legs and blood in her urine.
It also grew into a very important blood vessel called the inferior vena cava, which carries blood back to the heart.
A big team of doctors at Peerless Hospital worked together to remove the cancer.
The operation took almost ten hours, and doctors used a special machine to collect and return her own blood during surgery.
Even though the surgery was very risky, she recovered well.
She was discharged from the hospital after two weeks.
Doctors say this was the first surgery of its kind in Eastern India and shows how teamwork can save lives.
A multidisciplinary team at Peerless Hospital, Kolkata, performed a complex surgery on a 55-year-old woman with recurrent endometrial sarcoma.
A massive tumour thrombus had extended into the Inferior Vena Cava, the major blood vessel carrying blood from the lower body back to the heart.
The cancer had returned nearly a decade after the patient's initial surgery and radiotherapy, during which she had remained disease-free.
The nearly 10-hour operation involved a vascular bypass, tumour thrombus removal, IVC repair, and re-implantation of an injured right ureter.
The patient recovered smoothly, was discharged after a two-week hospital stay, and required no external donor blood thanks to a Cell Saver system.
