Maharashtra Civic Polls: SEC Pushes for Delimitation, Elections Soon
Maharashtra is preparing for local elections.
The State Election Commission (SEC) has asked the government to redraw the voting areas (delimitation) before the elections can happen.
These elections were delayed because the areas needed to be redrawn and due to a delay on decisions about how some groups (OBCs) are represented.
The Supreme Court has also gotten involved, urging the elections to be held soon.
A new election commissioner has been appointed to oversee the process.
SEC has requested the State Government to start the delimitation process.
Elections are for 29 municipal corporations, whose terms have expired.
Supreme Court directed SEC to notify local body elections.
Delimitation and OBC reservation are the main reasons for the delay.
New State Election Commissioner, Dinesh T. Waghmare, has been appointed.
