Diabetic Foot Ulcers Can Spread to Bone, Doctor Warns

A small foot wound can become dangerous for someone with diabetes.

This is because nerve damage may stop the person from feeling the injury.

Poor blood flow and high blood sugar can also slow healing and weaken the body’s response to infection.

The infection can move from the skin into deeper tissues and then into the bone.

Bone infection is called osteomyelitis.

Redness, swelling, pus, bad smell, dark tissue or a wound that gets deeper are warning signs.

Fever may be missing even when the infection is serious.

Doctors can use examinations, X-rays, blood tests and sometimes an MRI to check the bone.

Some infections can be treated with antibiotics, but severe cases may need surgery to protect the foot or the person’s life.
