NUCFDC Seeks RBI Nod for Small UCBs to Offer Digital Services
Imagine small banks in India called Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs).
The main group for these banks, called NUCFDC, wants to ask the country's big bank, the RBI, for permission.
Right now, only bigger UCBs with a lot of money (over 50 crore rupees) can offer online banking like internet and mobile services.
But many smaller UCBs, which hold a lot of people's savings, don't have enough money to meet this rule.
NUCFDC is building a secure computer system for these smaller banks.
They want to show the RBI that if these small banks use their secure system, they should be allowed to offer digital services too.
This would help them serve customers better and grow, just like the bigger banks.
NUCFDC plans to request the RBI to allow smaller UCBs (net worth < ₹50 crore) to offer digital services.
Currently, only UCBs with net worth over ₹50 crore are permitted by RBI for digital services.
More than half of India's 1,462 UCBs have net worths below the threshold.
NUCFDC is developing a centralized, cyber-secured IT infrastructure for partner UCBs.
The move aims to boost digital transformation and financial inclusivity within the UCB sector.

Economic Contribution of UCBs
Arguments for Allowing Digital Services
Professor Rakesh Arrawatia suggests that with capital support and permission to offer certain services, UCBs can significantly contribute to the economy and compete with larger banks.
Current RBI Regulations
The RBI's net worth criterion implicitly limits the scope and reach of smaller UCBs, potentially hindering their economic contribution.
