RBI Extends Credit and Repatriation Periods to Aid Exporters
India's central bank, the RBI, is helping businesses that sell goods to other countries because of global problems causing delays.
They've given these businesses more time to get paid, up to 15 months instead of 9.
If a customer pays in advance, the business now has 3 years to ship the goods instead of 1 year.
The RBI is also letting businesses pause or delay loan payments and adjust how much money they can borrow for making products.
The group representing exporters, FIEO, is happy because this gives businesses more breathing room.
However, some financial experts are concerned that if too many businesses use these payment breaks, it might make it harder for the banks to know if they'll get all their money back.
They might need to set aside more money just in case, but it probably won't hurt the banks too much in the short term.
RBI extended the export realization period from 9 to 15 months and the shipment period for advance payments from 1 to 3 years.
Measures include allowing moratoriums/deferments on debt repayments and recalculating drawing power for working capital facilities for impacted sectors.
Exporters can liquidate packing credit facilities for dispatches not completed by August 31, 2025, through alternate sources.
Industry experts caution that widespread use of relief measures could increase uncertainty on lender asset quality.
FIEO welcomed the RBI decisions, stating they will provide significant liquidity relief and enhance export competitiveness.

Liquidity and Cashflow Support
RBI and FIEO's Relief Measures
The RBI's measures, including extending the export realization period to 15 months and the shipment period for advance payments to three years, along with allowing moratoriums on debt repayments and recalculating drawing power for working capital, are welcomed by FIEO as providing significant liquidity relief and helping exporters manage cashflows amid trade disruptions.
Potential Lender Concerns
Industry experts like Anil Gupta from ICRA note that a large quantum of borrowers availing moratoriums or deferments could increase uncertainty regarding the asset quality for lenders, potentially leading to increased provisions.

RBI and FIEO's Relief Measures
FIEO believes the extended realization and shipment periods will allow Indian exporters to offer better credit terms to foreign buyers and ensure a level playing field with exporters from other economies, strengthening trade compliance.
Potential Lender Concerns
While the measures are seen as beneficial, the potential impact on lender asset quality remains a factor to monitor, with a possibility of a 5% provisioning on such loans.
