Gujarat High Court Orders Wage Increase for Anganwadi Workers
The Gujarat High Court decided that Anganwadi workers and helpers, who take care of children and pregnant women, should get paid more.
They cannot be compared to regular government employees.
The court ordered that these workers receive a certain minimum amount of money each month, with arrears being paid.
The court stated that the current pay is too low for the important work they do and that they should get paid the minimum wage, since the court had already stated they hold statutory posts.
Gujarat High Court ordered increased minimum wages for Anganwadi workers and helpers.
The court partially reversed a previous order that sought to treat Anganwadi workers and helpers like permanent government employees.
AWWs will receive a minimum monthly wage of Rs 24,800, and AWHs will receive Rs 20,300.
The court clarified that the principle of "equal pay for equal work" does not apply to these roles.
The order mandates payment of arrears from April 2025 within six months.
