India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is visiting Sri Lanka.

Tamil Nadu BJP leader Nainar Nagenthran said the visit could help solve problems faced by fishermen from Tamil Nadu.

He also said the visit could improve safety in nearby seas.

The visit is described as the first by an Indian Defence Minister to Sri Lanka in 38 years.

Singh arrived in Colombo on Tuesday for three days.

India and Sri Lanka may strengthen military exercises such as SLINEX and Mitra Shakti.

They may also cooperate on security at the Trincomalee oil tank farm.

More Sri Lankan military personnel could receive training at Indian defence institutions.
