ISL 2025-26 Season Restarts with Government Oversight
The Indian government has introduced a new law called the National Sports Governance Act.
This law gives the government more control over sports in India.
It affects all sports, including cricket, which has been mostly independent until now.
The government can now make decisions about how sports are run, solve problems, and even restart sports leagues if they stop working.
This is a big change because the government has not been so involved in sports before.
The Indian Super League (ISL) football season is restarting on 14 February 2026 with new rules and financial terms.
The season will have 91 matches, and the big Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan SG and East Bengal is scheduled for 3 May 2026.
Some people think this will help sports grow and be more fair.
Others worry that too much control might make private investors and players unhappy.
The government hopes this will help India do better in sports, like hosting the Olympics in the future.
The National Sports Governance Act grants the Indian government sweeping powers to regulate sports federations, including the BCCI, and has been used to restart the ISL 2025-26 season with new financial terms.
The ISL season will start on 14 February 2026 and feature 91 matches, with the Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan SG and East Bengal scheduled for 3 May 2026.
The government can impose solutions in cases of administrative paralysis, as seen in the ISL's restart with new financial terms and participation fees.
Cricket, which has traditionally operated independently, may now come under government oversight, though it may not be subject to the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
The Act aims to improve governance and prepare India for hosting the 2036 Olympics, but some fear it may discourage private investment and marginalize athletes.
