West Bengal in Legal Battles Over ED Raids and Voter ID Rules
The West Bengal government is involved in multiple legal battles.
First, they are fighting with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over raids on a political consultancy firm, I-PAC, and its director.
The ED alleges that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee interfered with their investigation by removing evidence.
Additionally, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has approved tea garden and cinchona plantation employment records as valid documents for voter ID in North Bengal.
This decision aims to include marginalized tea garden workers in the electoral process.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MPs have filed pleas in the Supreme Court alleging arbitrariness and procedural irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
They claim that the ECI is causing confusion and hardship to genuine voters.
Senior Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury has accused Mamata Banerjee of shielding her nephew Abhishek Banerjee in a coal scam and criticized the ED's handling of the investigation.
The West Bengal government has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court over ED raids on I-PAC and its director, Pratik Jain.
