Amazon’s Revolutionaries Reframes India’s Revolutionary Freedom Struggle for Television
The Revolutionaries is a new Amazon Prime Video show about people who fought British rule in India.
It is based on economist Sanjeev Sanyal’s book.
Sanyal says Indian history is often told mainly through the people who conquered India.
He wants the show to show that Indians also made choices and resisted foreign rule.
The story focuses on revolutionaries who continued one another’s work across generations.
Director Nikkhil Advani says the show is a dramatic version of history, not a documentary.
The production built many large sets to recreate old Indian places.
Some characters are based on Sanyal’s relatives.
The show will be released on September 12.
The Amazon Prime Video series The Revolutionaries is based on Sanjeev Sanyal’s book and releases September 12.
Sanyal says the series highlights Indian agency and a lesser-documented revolutionary strand of the freedom movement.
He argues revolutionaries formed a connected, multigenerational movement rather than isolated groups of armed individuals.
Director Nikkhil Advani says the production recreated about 120 sets, including Chandni Chowk and Calcutta docks.
The series dramatizes Sanyal’s family history, including his great-granduncle Sachindra Nath Sanyal and his wife Pratibha Lahiri.

Revolutionary Emphasis
Conventional Emphasis
How the freedom struggle is remembered
Revolutionary Emphasis
Sanjeev Sanyal says mainstream accounts often reduce India’s history to the actions of its conquerors and fail to connect revolutionary figures into a continuous movement.
Conventional Emphasis
The account described by Sanyal emphasizes the Congress narrative as an unbroken political lineage from the 1880s, while revolutionaries are often remembered as separate heroic individuals.
Role of violence and non-violence
Revolutionary Emphasis
Nikkhil Advani says the revolutionaries initially believed the British would use guns and that they would respond with force; he says non-violence emerged as a political option after Mahatma Gandhi entered the scene in the 1920s.
Conventional Emphasis
The article presents non-violence as the better-known framework through which India’s freedom struggle is commonly understood, without assessing which approach was more effective.
Historical presentation
Revolutionary Emphasis
Sanyal says the series brings attention to facts and people that received less attention in mainstream histories, including the revolutionaries’ ideas about the nation they wanted to build.
Conventional Emphasis
The series is a cinematic interpretation rather than a documentary, so its dramatized presentation should not be treated as a complete historical record.
