Tamil Nadu Apparel Firms Expand Sri Lankan Manufacturing Presence

Tamil Nadu Apparel Firms Expand Sri Lankan Manufacturing Presence

Some clothing companies from Tamil Nadu are expanding production in Sri Lanka.

They see Sri Lanka as a partner to India rather than a complete replacement.

SP Apparels expects its Sri Lankan factories to earn ₹150 crore–₹200 crore by March 2027.

It currently has about 1,650 machines there, and most are used for exports.

The company wants to add more machines without spending heavily on new factories.

Meenakshi India also works with a Sri Lankan factory to give customers another production option.

Sri Lanka can sell clothing to the European Union without import duties, while Indian clothing faces duties of about 8–12%.

One company executive said Sri Lanka’s advantage mainly comes from tariffs, not from being naturally cheaper or better than India.
