India's Road Accidents: Causes and Solutions
India has a big problem with road accidents.
Every hour, about 55 accidents happen, and 20 people die.
In 2023, there were almost half a million accidents, and over 1.7 lakh people died.
Tamil Nadu had the most accidents, with almost 184 happening every day.
Two buses crashed in November, killing 12 people.
The real number of deaths might be even higher because not all accidents are reported.
People often drive too fast, don't wear helmets or seatbelts, and many don't even have proper licenses.
The roads are also not very safe, with potholes and bad junctions.
To fix this, the government needs to improve roads, enforce traffic rules better, and make sure only skilled drivers are on the road.
They also need to check drivers' health and use real-time data to respond quickly to accidents.
India recorded 4,88,583 road accidents in 2023, resulting in 1,72,890 fatalities, with 55 accidents and 20 deaths reported every hour.
Tamil Nadu had the highest number of accidents in 2023, with 67,213 incidents, averaging 184 accidents per day.
Major causes of accidents include over-speeding (68.4% of accidents), lack of helmet/seatbelt use, unlicensed drivers, and poor infrastructure like potholes and bad junctions.
Solutions proposed include improving road infrastructure, enhancing enforcement of traffic rules, stricter licensing protocols, comprehensive medical screening for drivers, and using real-time data for better accident response.
The discrepancy between official reports and independent estimates highlights the issue of underreporting of road accident fatalities in India.
