EU Action Benefits Pakistan in Basmati Rice GI Dispute
The EU is making decisions that seem to help Pakistan in a fight with India over who gets to sell rice called Basmati.
First, the EU is letting Pakistan sell rice from Sindh to Poland, even though there are rules about where it can come from.
Second, the EU added Sindh to the area where Pakistani Basmati can be grown.
India says Pakistan is using their basmati and has applied to get their own special status.
Experts think the EU might be trying to make India and Pakistan work together on the Basmati issue, but India is not happy about this.
The question of authenticity arises.
The EU is permitting the import of 'Super Basmati Kernel' rice from Sindh, Pakistan, to Poland.
The EU included Sindh province in the definition of areas where Pakistan can grow Basmati rice.
These actions come amid a dispute between India and Pakistan over Basmati rice's geographical indication (GI) tag.
India has opposed Pakistan’s GI tag application, claiming Pakistan is illegally growing Indian Basmati varieties.
Experts speculate these developments are pressure tactics by the EU on India to seek a joint GI tag with Pakistan.
