Free Pune chess cafe meetups attract hundreds every weekend
People in Pune meet at cafes to play chess together.
The meetups are free, but players must order something from the cafe.
The group started after the COVID-19 lockdown when people looked for chess partners online.
Sanjana Desai and Chaitanya Bedkar helped turn it into a regular community.
Players use WhatsApp polls to decide whether a meetup will happen.
At least six people must promise to attend before a location is confirmed.
People who repeatedly say they will come but do not show up can be removed.
Children, older adults, and many people aged 20 to 35 take part.
The group also held an evening chess event for people who cannot attend on weekend mornings.
Pune Chess Hangouts has organized free cafe chess meetups for about three years.
The September 12 and 13 meetups drew 130 participants across seven Pune areas.
The community began on Reddit and later expanded through WhatsApp and Instagram.
Meetups proceed only when at least six people confirm attendance, with warnings for no-shows.
A new Cocktails and Chess evening attracted more people than the 40 participants expected.
