Foreign Law Degree Doesn't Ensure Indian LLB Eligibility: Bombay HC

Foreign Law Degree Doesn't Ensure Indian LLB Eligibility: Bombay HC

A student from India wanted to become a lawyer.

After finishing school in 2019, he went to England and studied law for three years.

Later, he came back to India and got a temporary seat in a three-year law course at a university in Navi Mumbai.

The university cancelled his seat because they said his first degree was in law, not in another subject.

The student argued that his foreign degree was recognised by the Bar Council of India, which approves lawyers.

The Bombay High Court, a big court in Mumbai, studied the case carefully.

The judges said the three-year law course in India is only for students who already have a bachelor's degree in some other subject.

They said school-leavers who want to study law should join the five-year law course instead.

The judges also said recognising a foreign degree for one purpose does not make it valid for another purpose.

So the court agreed with the university and sent the student away, but he can still apply for other ways to become a lawyer, like the BCI Bridge Course.
