India's Nuclear Capacity Goal
India has set a big goal to increase its nuclear power capacity by 2047.
Right now, India uses a lot of coal for electricity, but the new plan wants to use more nuclear power instead.
This plan also allows private companies to help build nuclear power plants.
The goal is to have 100 GWe of nuclear power by 2047, which is much more than what India has now.
This will help India use cleaner energy and reduce its dependence on coal.
India aims to increase its nuclear capacity to 100 GWe by 2047, more than ten times the current 8.8 GWe.
The draft National Electricity Policy 2026 pushes for the adoption of advanced nuclear technologies, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Private players are now allowed to participate in India's nuclear sector due to the SHANTI Act.
India currently relies heavily on coal for both grid-based and captive power.
The new policy seeks to recalibrate India's power mix by promoting nuclear power as a substitute for coal.
