Andhra Pradesh Seeks Economic Growth Initiatives
The Andhra Pradesh Star Hotels Association (ASHA) met with the Union finance minister to ask for help with taxes.
They want the government to allow them to use input tax credit (ITC) under the current 5% GST rate.
This would help them lower prices for customers and make tourism more affordable.
Under the previous 12% GST rate, they could use ITC to reduce their costs, but now they can't, which makes things more expensive.
They also asked for a two-year period to use up any ITC they have already collected.
Additionally, they want the government to separate the tax on food and drinks from the tax on hotel rooms, which they say would help both the government and the hotel industry.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government is planning to set up commercial complexes to sell handlooms, textiles, and tribal products in five major cities, including Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Tirupati.
The government aims to provide sustainable income for weavers, artisans, and tribal communities by making their products easily accessible to consumers.
The AP Chambers also submitted a wish list to the Union finance minister, focusing on strengthening the economic ecosystem through various initiatives, including MSME competitiveness, GST simplification, and investment support for tourism and hospitality.
ASHA appealed to the Union finance minister for ITC under the 5% GST slab to reduce consumer costs.
Under the previous 12% GST, hoteliers could use ITC to absorb 5–7% of costs, but the current 5% GST without ITC increases operational costs.
ASHA warned that higher prices could reduce demand, make tourism projects less viable, and decrease private investment.
They requested a two-year transition period to utilize accumulated ITC if the 5% GST with ITC cannot be restored.
ASHA also urged the Centre to delink GST on hotel food and beverages from room tariffs to boost government revenue and help the hospitality sector grow.
