How a jobless young man built India's greatest hotel empire

Mohan Singh Oberoi was born in a small village in India in 1898, when his father had already died.

His 18-year-old mother raised him alone, and the family had no money.

As a young man, he went to the hill town of Shimla hoping to become a government clerk, but he failed the exam.

With no plan, he walked into a hotel called the Cecil and got a job weighing coal for the water heaters.

He worked very hard and learned everything about running hotels.

One night he stayed up to type an urgent report for an important leader, who gave him a 100-rupee tip that made him feel hopeful.

Years later, he bought his own hotel by borrowing against everything he owned, even his wife's jewellery.

He kept buying and fixing famous hotels, and even turned a palace into a luxury hotel.

By the time he grew old, he had built one of India's biggest hotel companies, which his family still runs today.
