Kashmiri Filmmaker Arfat Sheikh Released on Bond; Deportation Case Continues
Filmmaker Arfat Sheikh was held by U.S. immigration officers after getting off a plane at Dulles Airport on September 24.
A campaign run by his friends and relatives says he was released on bond on October 8.
His deportation case is still going on.
The campaign says Sheikh came to the United States on a student visa in 2019 and applied for asylum in 2020.
It also says he had permission to live and work in the country.
The Department of Homeland Security says he stayed longer than his temporary admission allowed.
The agency says a pending application does not automatically give someone legal status.
Sheikh’s first feature film, Saffron Kingdom, was released in 2024 and won festival awards.
A campaign organized by Arfat Sheikh’s friends and relatives said he was released on bond on Thursday, October 8, after about two weeks in ICE custody.
Sheikh was detained on September 24 after stepping off a flight from California at Washington Dulles International Airport.
The campaign says Sheikh entered the United States on a student visa in 2019, filed for asylum in 2020, and was authorized to live and work in the country.
The Department of Homeland Security says Sheikh overstayed his temporary admission and that a pending application does not itself confer legal status.
