NDA Weighs 2029 Simultaneous Polls Across 22 States

NDA Weighs 2029 Simultaneous Polls Across 22 States

The NDA is studying whether elections in 22 states and Union Territories can happen alongside India’s 2029 national election.

Four of those states already hold their Assembly elections at the same time as the Lok Sabha election.

Eleven others are expected to vote before 2029.

To make the schedules match, some state Assemblies might be ended early.

This could shorten some Assembly terms by three or four years.

The plan depends on the NDA keeping its governments in the relevant states.

A parliamentary committee is separately studying Bills that currently point to 2034 for the first nationwide simultaneous elections.

Some BJP Chief Ministers support coordinating the elections.

The Congress disagrees and says the plan could weaken democracy and accountability.
