5-Day Workweek For Banks: Status And Timeline
Bank employees in India want to work only five days a week, like many other jobs.
Right now, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, but a new idea is to make all Saturdays and Sundays holidays.
This means banks would be open only from Monday to Friday.
The government is still thinking about this idea and hasn't decided yet.
The banks say they have enough staff, so that's not a problem.
If this idea is approved, employees might work a bit longer each day from Monday to Friday, but customer service hours will stay the same.
We don't know when this might happen because the government and the Reserve Bank of India still need to say yes.
The proposal seeks to make all Saturdays and Sundays bank holidays, shifting to a Monday–Friday work schedule.
The Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and major bank unions support the proposal, which is currently under government consideration.
The government has not provided a timeline for implementation, and both the Finance Ministry and RBI must approve the proposal.
The current system has the second and fourth Saturdays of every month as holidays, with other Saturdays being working days.
The government has rejected staff shortages as a reason for the delay, stating that 96% of required staff positions are filled.
