Delhi Protest Restrictions Disrupt Travel, Work and Festive Shopping
A political group planned a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
Police restrictions around central Delhi made it harder for people to travel.
Some cab rides became much more expensive, and many metro station gates were scheduled to close for part of Friday night and Saturday.
Several markets were expected to shut, while others planned to stay open.
Some nearby offices told workers to work from home.
Food and grocery deliveries were reported suspended in two central postal areas.
These changes could make festive shopping and restaurant business harder.
The party said the protest was about checking electoral rolls and asked people not to use violence.
Delhi Police had not given permission for the demonstration.
Cab fares in parts of South Delhi, Noida and Gurugram were reported at three or four times normal levels, with an 8-km ride quoted at ₹1,200.
Delhi Metro entry and exit gates at 45 stations were scheduled to close from 9 pm Friday until 6 pm Saturday; interchange facilities were to remain available except at New Delhi.
Connaught Place, Palika Market, Janpath, Khan Market and Karol Bagh were expected to close or advised to shut, while several other markets said they would remain open.
Some offices around Barakhamba Road and Connaught Place advised employees to work from home, and Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy delivery operations were reported suspended in pincodes 110001 and 110002.
The Cockroach Janata Party said its Jantar Mantar demonstration sought accountability over the electoral-roll revision and urged participants to remain peaceful, although Delhi Police had denied permission.
