Tamil Nadu Debt Row Sparks Political Tensions

Tamil Nadu Debt Row Sparks Political Tensions

A leader from the Congress party, Praveen Chakravarthy, said that Tamil Nadu's debt is now higher than Uttar Pradesh's and that the state's debt-to-GDP ratio is higher than before COVID.

This has caused a political row in Tamil Nadu, with DMK leaders like MM Abdulla and Kanimozhi defending the state's economic growth and asserting that the debt is for capital investment and asset creation.

Some Congress leaders, like MP Jothimani, also distanced themselves from Chakravarthy's comparison, highlighting Tamil Nadu's achievements in various sectors.

The BJP has backed Chakravarthy's statement, accusing the DMK of distorting data.

This controversy has put the DMK-Congress alliance in an uncomfortable position ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with political observers noting that the Congress may be exploring other options to strengthen its bargaining position.
