India’s First District Labour Data Reveals Wide Regional Gaps

India’s First District Labour Data Reveals Wide Regional Gaps

India has published new information showing how jobs and work differ from one district to another.

Earlier national averages could hide these local differences.

Surat had the highest workforce participation among the 100 most populous districts.

Darbhanga had the lowest participation in that group.

Women’s participation was very high in some districts, such as Hamirpur, but much lower in places such as East Delhi.

Most districts had unemployment rates between 0.5% and 5.5%.

More than three-quarters of districts had fewer than 30% of young people outside work, school, or training.

The figures may help governments decide where to focus job and skills programmes.

However, the numbers do not show whether jobs pay well or why districts perform differently.
