Supreme Court Addresses Governance and Judicial Delays
The Supreme Court of India has been very busy in 2025, making important decisions.
One big decision was about the powers of Governors and state legislatures.
The Court said Governors can't just sit on bills forever; they have to act within certain time limits.
The Court also made 10 old bills into laws because they were held up for too long.
Another important decision was about child trafficking.
The Court told all High Courts to speed up trials for these cases and make sure they are finished within six months.
The Court was not happy with a High Court that let some people out on bail who were involved in child trafficking, saying they didn't take the crime seriously enough.
The Court also gave guidelines to help stop these crimes and warned that if these guidelines aren't followed, there could be consequences.
The Supreme Court ruled that Governors cannot indefinitely delay assent to state bills, violating their constitutional duty under Article 200.
The Court set reasonable timelines for gubernatorial actions on bills, including assent or reservation within 1 month, withholding or returning within 3 months, and post-reconsideration assent within 1 month.
The Court deemed 10 previously withheld bills as having received assent retroactively, making them law.
The Supreme Court directed High Courts and trial courts to accelerate child trafficking trials, collecting data and enforcing timelines for completion within six months.
The Court criticized the Allahabad High Court's 'callous approach' in granting bail to individuals involved in interstate child trafficking, emphasizing the need to balance personal liberty with social interest.
