SEBI Overhauls Stockbroker Regulations After 30 Years

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has updated its rules for stockbrokers after 30 years.

The new rules, called SEBI (Stock Brokers) Regulations 2026, make the language simpler and remove old parts that are no longer needed.

They also add clearer definitions for important terms.

The new rules allow stockbrokers to do activities that are regulated by other financial authorities.

The rules are now organized into eleven chapters to make them easier to understand.

SEBI has also removed repeated sections and combined related ones to make the rules clearer.

This change is meant to make it easier for stockbrokers to follow the rules and do their business.

Additionally, SEBI is looking into trading bond derivatives to make the corporate bond market deeper.

They are also working on making muni-bonds grow through new rules and outreach programs.

SEBI wants to build a smarter regulatory system and is working on a new Securities Markets Code (SMC) to make the capital markets better.

They are also simplifying rules for market infrastructure institutions to make compliance easier.
