Katalyst Spacecraft Reaches Failing Swift Observatory, Turns Away

NASA’s Swift telescope is slowly falling toward Earth because the Sun has made its orbit lower.

A private company called Katalyst sent a robot spacecraft named Link to try to help it.

Link got as close as nine miles and took pictures of Swift.

However, Link had already spun out of control earlier in the mission.

Fixing that problem used too much of its fuel.

Without enough fuel, Link could not push Swift into a safer orbit.

The rescue was stopped, but Link still collected useful information for NASA.

NASA says the mission can teach engineers how to service spacecraft in the future.

Swift is expected to fall into the atmosphere sometime between October and the end of the year.
