SpaceX to reinvent telecom via carrier MVNO partnerships
SpaceX is a company that builds rockets and satellites.
The article says SpaceX probably won't ruin phone companies.
Instead, it might work together with them.
A phone company could let SpaceX use its network, like renting a room.
Then SpaceX would sell phone service to people using that rented network.
This is called an MVNO.
Some phone companies might not want to help SpaceX.
But they may feel they have to, because the first one to team up could get ahead of the others.
Other companies like Boost Mobile already do this kind of thing.
SpaceX may set up a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) agreement with legacy carriers rather than going it alone.
An MVNO arrangement involves renting network capacity at wholesale rates and selling it to consumers.
The article cites EchoStar's Boost Mobile, which rents AT&T's network, as an example of this model.
Analysts describe the wireless industry's 'prisoner's dilemma' over whether carriers should partner with SpaceX.
AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile might have no choice but to partner, since the first to do so would generate value at the expense of the others.
- Who
- SpaceX, Elon Musk, and legacy wireless carriers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile; the article also cites EchoStar's Boost Mobile.
- What
- SpaceX may establish an MVNO agreement with legacy carriers, renting network capacity at wholesale rates and selling it to consumers.
- When
- Not specified in the article.
- Where
- Not explicitly stated; the carriers mentioned (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) operate in the U.S. wireless market.
- Why
- Because carriers might have no choice: analysts describe a 'prisoner's dilemma' in which the first carrier to partner with SpaceX will generate value at the expense of the others.
