Madras HC Questions State on Deepam Order
The Madras High Court is upset because the Tamil Nadu government did not follow its order to light a special lamp called Karthigai Deepam at a specific place near a temple and a dargah in Madurai.
The court asked the government why it didn't obey the order.
The government said it had filed an appeal and that it was not trying to disobey the court.
The court also heard that the situation was tense with many people gathering, which is why the government imposed restrictions.
The court postponed the hearing to January 9.
Meanwhile, some MPs have started proceedings to remove the judge, saying he did something wrong, but they say it's not about the lamp order.
The case is about who has the right to light the lamp and where.
Madras High Court questioned Tamil Nadu government for not executing its order to light Karthigai Deepam at a specific pillar.
The state government filed an appeal against the single judge's directions and claimed no intention to defy the court's order.
Madurai District Collector and City Police Commissioner stated that prohibitory orders were imposed to maintain public order due to gathering crowds.
The contempt hearing was adjourned to January 9, with the appeal by the Tamil Nadu government currently being heard by a two-judge Bench.
