EPFO Wage Ceiling Rises, But EDLI Cover Remains Capped

EPFO Wage Ceiling Rises, But EDLI Cover Remains Capped

The government is raising the monthly wage limit used for mandatory EPF membership from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000.

This means more of an employee’s salary can be counted for provident-fund-related contributions.

It also changes the mathematical formula used to calculate EDLI life-insurance benefits.

For someone earning Rs 25,000 a month, that formula could produce a benefit of Rs 10.5 lakh.

However, the EDLI rules currently limit the amount actually paid to Rs 7 lakh.

So the higher wage limit does not automatically mean higher insurance protection.

The employer pays the EDLI contribution, not the employee.

A separate government decision would be needed to increase the maximum payout.
