Delhi University suspends PhD scholar after alleged assault on professor
A student at Delhi University is in trouble for allegedly hurting a teacher.
The student's name is Shubham Singh, and he is studying for a PhD, a very advanced degree, in the law department.
A security camera video appears to show him waiting near a building and then hitting the teacher as the teacher walked inside.
Because of this video, the university told the student to stop coming to classes for now, which is called a suspension.
He is also not allowed to enter any part of the university campus.
The police are looking into what happened and have opened a case.
A group of three teachers will study the incident and write a report.
Some teachers' groups say this is not enough to keep teachers safe.
They say teachers have been hurt or treated badly before on this campus.
They want the university to take stronger action.
Delhi University suspended Faculty of Law PhD scholar Shubham Singh with immediate effect after an alleged physical assault on a professor at Umang Bhawan.
CCTV footage showed Singh waiting for the professor and attacking him as he entered the building around 10:30 am on Monday, August 17, 2026.
The university banned Singh's entry into its premises with immediate effect under Ordinance XV-B of the Delhi University Act, 1922.
Delhi Police registered an FIR at Maurice Nagar police station, and an investigation into the incident is underway.

Adequacy of response to assault on teacher
Democratic Teachers' Front (DTF)
DTF argued that mere suspension does not address the gravity of the incident, that teacher safety on campus is being repeatedly compromised, and that the administration's slow, insufficient and often absent response leaves teachers with little confidence; it demanded strict, swift action and clear enforceable measures.
University Administration
The university suspended the scholar with immediate effect, banned his campus entry under Ordinance XV-B, registered an FIR through Delhi Police, and constituted an independent three-member enquiry committee to investigate and submit a report.
