India's TB Detection Program Falls Short of Key Performance Targets
Imagine India is trying to find people who have a sickness called tuberculosis (TB) but don't know it.
They have a special plan where helpers go door-to-door to look for these sick people, especially those who might be more likely to get sick.
However, a study showed that this plan isn't working very well.
They aimed to check 90 out of every 100 people who were at high risk, but they only managed to check about 7 people.
They also expected to find a certain number of sick people, but they found fewer than expected.
Even when they found people who might be sick, not enough of them got tested properly.
This means many people with TB might still be hidden, and they could accidentally spread the sickness to others.
Experts think better training for the helpers and more money might be needed.
Some also suggest focusing on helping people who already know they are sick instead of the door-to-door searches.
India's program to find hidden tuberculosis cases screened only 7.4% of the high-risk population, far below the 90% target.
The active case finding (ACF) initiative failed to meet four out of six key performance benchmarks.
Researchers cited inadequate training, knowledge gaps, and resource constraints as likely reasons for the shortfalls.
The program identified fewer presumed TB cases than expected and had a lower sputum testing confirmation rate.
Experts suggest that poor performance could delay India's goal of eliminating TB by 2025 and propose strengthening existing programs or re-evaluating ACF strategies.

- Evaluation period covered data up to the present, with 2022 estimates for hidden TB.
- Where
- 30 randomly selected districts across India.
- Why
- Likely causes include inadequate training, knowledge gaps, planning deficiencies, resource constraints, and potentially social stigma.
