IIT Hyderabad Dog Death Prompts Police Probe
A community dog at IIT Hyderabad died after being badly hurt.
An animal welfare activist said someone may have beaten the dog.
Police opened a case, but they have not identified anyone accused of doing it.
The institute said its cameras did not show clear evidence of an assault.
A post-mortem could not find the cause of death because the dog’s body had decomposed.
The institute said it would have tried to get veterinary help if campus staff had been told about the injured dog.
This is the second reported campus dog death in about a month.
The institute says it has feeding areas for dogs and is discussing their rehabilitation with local officials.
Sangareddy Rural police registered a case on October 1 over a campus dog’s death.
The complaint alleges the dog was beaten at IIT Hyderabad on September 27; no accused have been identified.
Animal welfare activist Adulapuram Goutham called it the second such incident on campus within a month.
IIT Hyderabad said CCTV checks found nothing conclusive and the post-mortem could not determine the cause of death.
The institute said it cooperated with police, provided designated dog-feeding areas and was discussing dog rehabilitation with municipal authorities.
