Virally-Linked Cancers Potentially Preventable by Vaccines, Expert Says
Imagine some sicknesses, like certain kinds of cancer, can be started by tiny invaders called viruses.
A smart scientist named Professor Banks explained that about one out of every ten cancers is caused by these viruses.
The good news is, just like we have shots to stop other sicknesses, we might be able to make special shots, called vaccines, to stop these cancer-causing viruses.
One example is a virus called HPV, which can lead to cancer in the cervix.
Scientists are studying how these viruses trick our body's cells to grow into tumors.
They are even looking at using this knowledge to create new ways to treat cancers that have already started.
The conference brought many smart doctors and scientists together to talk about new ideas and technologies, like special 'coding' for vaccines and computer helpers, to fight cancer better and help people who are sick.
Nearly 12% of global cancers are linked to viruses and could potentially be prevented by vaccines.
Professor Lawrence Banks highlighted Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) as a key virus responsible for various cancers, including cervical cancer.
Research is focused on understanding how viral oncoproteins E6 and E7 contribute to tumor formation in HPV-induced cancers.
These viral oncoproteins are considered potential targets for new therapeutic interventions.
