Ceiling collapse injures two at NIS Patiala Independence Day event
On Saturday, August 15, people at a sports institute in Patiala, India, were celebrating Independence Day.
They were sitting in a big hall to watch a cultural show.
Suddenly, part of the ceiling above them crashed down.
A false ceiling is a second ceiling that hangs below the real one, and that is what fell.
A few people, including some students and players, got hurt, and two people were injured.
Doctors at the institute helped them right away, and some were taken for special scans called CT scans.
The doctors checked the results and said everyone was fine.
Officials think heavy rain the night before might have caused water to leak into the roof, which made the ceiling panel fall.
The people who were hurt had been sitting in the front rows of the hall.
A portion of the false ceiling collapsed at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala during the Independence Day function on Saturday, August 15.
Two persons were injured, while another account said some students and players at the venue suffered minor injuries.
The collapse occurred in the multipurpose hall-cum-wrestling hall, where the cultural performance for the Independence Day celebrations was being held.
Officials suspected that water seepage into the roof from incessant rain the previous day may have caused the false ceiling panel to collapse.
Injured students and players were treated by the NIS medical team, and some were sent for CT scans whose reports came back normal.
