Telangana Continues Two-Child Policy for Rural Elections
Imagine Telangana is having local elections in the countryside.
To run for office, you generally can't have more than two kids.
This rule started a long time ago to try and control how many people live in the state.
Even though it was removed in cities, it still exists in the rural areas.
The government promised to maybe change this rule, but for now, it's still in place for anyone who wants to run in these elections.
This rule was first put in place by a bigger state, and a few states have removed the rule in recent years, including a neighboring state.
Telangana enforces a two-child policy in rural local body elections.
The policy prevents individuals with more than two children from contesting polls.
The rule was introduced in undivided Andhra Pradesh in 1994 and was removed in urban areas in 2019.
The Telangana State Election Commission (TGSEC) issued the election schedule, reiterating the rule.
Exceptions apply if a candidate had more than two children before May 31, 1995.
