ICICI, Vodafone Fined for SIM-Swap Fraud
ICICI Bank and Vodafone Idea were fined for not stopping a fraud where criminals tricked them into giving a fake SIM card.
This fake SIM was used to steal money from a company's bank account.
The company lost over Rs 1.19 crore.
The bank and phone company were punished because they didn't check properly before giving the new SIM.
Some people think this kind of fraud can be stopped by making apps check if the real SIM is in the phone, but others say this idea wasn't properly discussed before being suggested.
ICICI Bank and Vodafone Idea were fined Rs 15 lakh for lapses in a SIM-swap fraud case.
Fraudsters stole Rs 1.19 crore from Collective Trade Links Pvt. Ltd. by bypassing OTP authentication.
Vodafone Idea activated a duplicate SIM without proper verification, enabling the fraud.
COAI supports SIM-binding to reduce financial scams, while BIF opposes it, citing lack of consultation.
The fraud was executed over a weekend in March 2023, with 22 transactions made using the duplicate SIM.
