IIIT Hyderabad and Telangana Police launch AI traffic system VIOLA

IIIT Hyderabad and the Telangana State Police have developed a new AI system called VIOLA to help with traffic enforcement.

This system uses dashcams in police patrol vehicles to detect traffic violations like riders not wearing helmets, triple riding, wrong-side driving, and dangerous overtaking.

The AI analyzes the footage and identifies violations, which are then sent to the Telangana Police’s e-Challan system.

Human officers verify 96% of the violations to ensure fairness and accuracy.

The system also helps map road infrastructure issues like potholes and damaged roads.

The goal is to reduce confrontations between police and citizens and make traffic enforcement more efficient.
